갈릴리 연합감리교회는 실리콘 밸리에서 처음으로 개척된 한국이민교회 (1969년)이다. 그후 40년동안 갈릴리교회와 실리콘 밸리는 극적인 변화를 겪었다. 그러던중 갈릴리교회는 2010년 7월, 교회창립 40주년을 축하한후, 40년동안 같은 장소에서 예배를 드렸던 서니베일 제일연합감리교회와 통합하게 된다.

창립당시 이민 커뮤니티는 한국어중심, 단일문화 사회였다. 한 세대가 지난 오늘, 이민사회는 활기찬 커뮤니티이다 — 다국어와 다문화적이며 미국 사회의 모든 분야에서 섬기는 일꾼들을 배출하고 있다. 제일연합감리교회와 통합한 갈릴리는 점점 다문화 — 다인종 — 다국어 사회로 변화가는 미국사회에서 하나님께서 주시는 새로운 사명에 충실하고자 한다.

갈릴리의 새로운 비전

갈릴리에서는 한국어 예배와 교육프로그램을 지속할 예정이다. 그러면서 갈릴리의 중심과제는 자라나는 다음 세대를 미국과 인류사회에 봉사하는 일꾼들로 키우는데 있다. 이 목적을 위해 제일연합감리교회의 다문화사역을 확장하려고 한다. 교회라는 글로발 공동체안에서 "우리"의 문화와 전통을 새롭게 해석/재창조 하면서 더 큰 "우리"를 만들게 될것이다.

갈릴리는 예수님께서 1,200일동안 가르치며, 말씀선포하며, 병고치신 사역의 고향이었다. 부활 후 예수님은 그의 제자들을 갈릴리로 보내 그들을 거기에서 다시 만나게 되리라고 말했다. 즉, 실리콘 밸리는 땅에서 하늘의 뜻을 이루신 예수님의 사역이 계속되는 우리의 갈릴리이기도 하다. 예수님을 따라 우리도 사람들을 하나님의 사랑으로 초대하며 소개한다. 사람들을 하나님의 형상에 따라 살아가도록 촉구하는 변화를 경험하는 기회를 준다. 우리의 실천생활을 통해 관용, 용서, 환대와 친절을 모델링한다. 나아가 가난한 사람을 도우며, 약한자를 지키며, 지구를 보호하는 실천적 신앙생활을 한다.

우리의 비전은 에레미야 29장7절 이다. "나에게 쫓겨 [이민] 가 사는 그 나라가 잘되도록 힘쓰며 잘되기를 나에게 빌어라. 그 나라가 잘되어야 너희도 잘될 것이다." 하나님께서는 우리 갈릴리와 제일연합감리교회가 한 마음이되어 우리가 살고 있는 이땅을 진정으로 사랑하기를 원하신다. 그래서 이 땅이 잘되고 건강한 사회가 이루어 지도록 기도하며 노력해야한다. 제일교회와 갈릴리가 하나된 것은 바로 이러한 비전이 있기 때문이다.

Galilee Korean Ministry began in 1969 as the first Korean-American church in the Silicon Valley. Since then, the Korean-American community along with the rest of Silicon Valley has undergone dramatic changes. As a result, in 2010, following its 40th anniversary, Galilee merged with the First United Methodist Church of Sunnyvale which had provided it with its worship space for most of its history.

When Galilee began in 1969, the immigrant community was small, monolingual and first generation. Now a generation later, it is a vibrant community that is growing, is multilingual and multicultural and is nurturing leaders in every facet of the American society. In merging with First UMC, Galilee seeks to be faithful to God's call to the church in our increasingly multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual society.

While providing Korean language programs, Galilee will increase its outreach to English- speaking Korean-Americans who look to put their gifts to use in serving the larger community by nurturing the next generation of servant-leaders. As an integral part of the First UMC community, Galilee will expand the multicultural ministry of FUMC by enriching the rich fabric of our common cultural and spiritual life.

Galilee was the place of Jesus' 1200 days of ministry of preaching, teaching, healing and compassion. After his resurrection, Jesus told his disciples that he would meet them in Galilee — to continue the work of God's kingdom — of touching heaven and changing people to transform the world. In other words, the Silicon Valley is the site of our Galilean work of creating heaven on earth — of introducing people to God's love; of empowering people to live up to the image of God in them; of modeling the Kingdom values of tolerance, forgiveness, hospitality and generosity; and of extending practical compassion by feeding the poor, fending the weak, and caring for Planet Earth.

Jeremiah 29:7 is our vision: "Make yourselves at home there and work for the country's welfare. Pray for Silicon Valley's well-being. If things go well for Silicon Valley, things will go well for you." (Adapted from The Message). God is calling Galilee and the First UMC to first love the land we call home, to pray and work for its well-being, success, and peace. May we be faithful to this vision.
