Beginning March 9, SUMC will offer a six-week Lenten study based on Victor Hugo’s provocative and timely themes. Each week, through the lens of Christianity, we will study one of six themes that are as timely today as they were in 1815.
In week one, we will discuss what happens when grace and justice collide. Week two considers poverty’s debilitating effect on individuals and communities. In week three, we get a bit of relief when Marius and Cosette fall in love, but even then, we must confront the question: do we love out of obedience, or are we obedient because we love? In week five, we face the painful reality that changing an unjust society is nearly impossible. Revolution has unbearable consequences, and working through the system is grindingly slow. Finally, in week six, reconciliation occurs: grace is given and received. However, we find that it is not as simple as that!
Lenten study will primarily be done in small groups, but anyone who is not part of a small group and would like to participate is welcome to join any of the groups on the dates and times listed below: Child care is available for the Sunday and Friday group sessions.
- Sunday @ 11:30 AM
- Wednesday @ 1:00 PM
- Thursday @ 7:30 PM
- Friday @ 6:30 PM
We will conclude the 6-week Lenten study with a movie night when all are invited to watch the academy award winning musical.
